Dr. Ji Young Cho
HIE LAB Director, Professor

Ji Young Cho's research interests lie in understanding of human spatial perception and creation process, and behavior in built environment with interdisciplinary perspective, integrated with knowledge in cognitive psychology, neuroscience, instructional technology, social science, and art and humanities.
Before her Ph.D. study in USA, she worked as a project manager and designer for 10 years in Joong Ang Design, Seoul, Korea, and designed more than 50 renovation projects in Korea and overseas. She has taught in the Interior Design Program, College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University for 6 years. She completed her doctoral degree in Architectural studies with the emphasis on Environment & Behavior at the University of Missouri. She holds her master's and bachelor’s degrees in architecture from Pusan National University, Korea. She holds a LEED-AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional) Certificate in the USA and an Architecture Engineer License in South Korea. She was received creative scholarship from Interior Design Educators Council and Faculty Excellence Award from Kent State University.

Dr. Yi-Kyung Hong
Research Professor,
Department of Housing & Interior Design, Kyunghee University, Seoul Korea


She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Kyung Hee University, and her doctoral dissertation was “A Study on the Interior Design Guideline & preferences for Senior Congregate Housing in Korea”. Afterward, she worked as a postdoc at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Dept. of Architectural Studies. She worked as a BK21 Academic Research Professor in the Department of Gerontology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyunghee University, and has taught at Kangwon National University and Kyunghee University Graduate School of Public Affairs. She is currently a research professor in the Dept. of Housing and Interior Design at Kyunghee University.

Research interests: Environmental psychology, EEG, Senior Housing Model and Design Research, Smart Home.

Key studies include “Global Research Trends on Smart Homes for Older Adults: Bibliometric and Scientometric Analyses (2022) (SSCI), “An Analysis of Housing Welfare Services for Public Rental Supportive Housing for the Elderly (2022) (KCI)”, “A Study on the Recognition and Necessity of Smart Home Service by Residents of Welfare Housing for the Elderly(2021) (KCI),” and “Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of Yongin-Yeongdeok Gyeonggi Happy Housing (Mid-rise Modular) (Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation) (2024)”, “Case Study on Housing Supply for Retired Seniors (Seoul Housing Policy Office) (2024)”, and “Study on the Virtuous Cycle Ecosystem of Residential Mobility(Korea Real Estate Development Association) (2023)”.
